ADC flags off first-ever synthetic turf volleyball cup

Sopore, Aug 19 : The much-anticipated Wular Smash Volleyball Tournament under the banner of “My Youth, My Pride” in association with the J&K Sports Council, began on Tuesday at Sheikh-ul-Aalam ground Tarzoo in Sopore.

The event, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), marks the first-ever volleyball tournament in the region to be hosted on synthetic turf, aiming to nurture sporting talent and channel the energy of youth toward a drug-free, healthy lifestyle.

The inaugural clash was played between Jahama Volleyball Cup and Rajwara Volleyball Cup, marking the formal start of the 12-day tournament. A total of 16 teams from across North Kashmir are participating in the event.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, S.A. Raina, who was the chief guest at the opening ceremony, lauded the initiative.

“It is heartening to see such a competitive sporting event in Sopore. The tournament will go a long way in nurturing local talent. The newly introduced turf provides an excellent and supportive playing surface and the management deserves appreciation for bringing this to Sopore,” Raina said.

Similarly, Chief Organiser Ishfaq Ahmed Dar expressed gratitude to the Sports Council for extending support and termed the event a step toward empowering Kashmiri youth.

Dar said that Wular Smash is more than just a tournament. “It’s a platform to unite our youth through sport and provide them with an alternative to negative distractions. We are thankful to the J&K Sports Council for their backing. Our vision is to promote a healthy lifestyle, showcase the energy of our youth and ensure that Sopore becomes a hub of sporting excellence.”

Organisers believe this initiative will pave the way for more such professional-level tournaments in the region and help build a strong sports culture in North Kashmir.
