Srinagar: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest & Tribal Affairs, Javed Rana, on Thursday stated that the long absence of an elected government in Jammu and Kashmir had significantly disrupted developmental activities, but the Omar Abdullah-led administration is now working to restore them gradually.
Rana said that administrative stagnation had resulted from the lack of political leadership in recent years. “There was no elected government, and as a result, the entire system was paralyzed. We are now taking steps to revive it and expect to overcome these challenges in a phased manner,” he said.
Addressing concerns over the delay and non-implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) projects, the Minister admitted to receiving several complaints about inadequate planning and execution. He said the department has been directed to investigate the reasons behind such lapses and assured that corrective measures will follow.
Rana also spoke about the ongoing water crisis caused by an unusually dry season and the broader impacts of climate change. He assured the public that previously sanctioned schemes would be reactivated and that additional funding for vital irrigation and flood control works would be secured through NABARD.
Regarding the distribution of timber and firewood, the Minister revealed that a new, need-based policy is in development to ensure fair allocation.
On the issue of Kashmiri students recently evacuated from Iran due to rising regional tensions, Rana noted that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is personally monitoring the situation. “The CM is in constant contact with the students. Some have already returned, and steps are being taken to ensure the safe return of the rest,” he said, confirming that special transport arrangements have been made.
Reaffirming the government’s developmental vision, Rana said the administration is committed to building a “Naya Jammu Kashmir” through a steady and focused approach. (KNO)
