Kashmir schools reopen today after summer break; SED faces backlash over revised timings

Srinagar, Jul 08: After a 15-day summer vacation, schools across Kashmir reopened today, July 8, but not without controversy, as the School Education Department (SED) faced sharp criticism over the newly announced timings and scheduling format.

Minister of Education Sakina Itoo while confirming said that the institutions falling within Srinagar Municipal limits will function from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM, while those outside city limits, including rural areas, will operate from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

In a move aimed at syllabus completion, Itoo said schools will conduct two additional online classes after a one-hour break, with teachers remaining available till 2 PM. “All Heads of Institutions must ensure these online classes are held without fail,” she added.

However, the decision has sparked widespread resentment among parents and teachers, who argue that the early timing is harsh, especially for younger children.

“It’s unfair to expect kids to wake up before 6 AM. They need adequate sleep for their mental well-being,” said Nasreena, a concerned parent. “I would rather keep my children at home than risk their health. This timing is unjustified.”

Another parent questioned the practicality of the schedule: “What about working parents? Who will receive the kids when they return home so early? The government should reconsider.”

Teachers have also expressed concerns over the post-school online sessions, saying it adds unnecessary pressure on students. “The Department should consider shifting online classes to evening hours to reduce the burden,” one teacher suggested.

Many parents also pointed out that online classes had worked well during the COVID-19 lockdown, and a similar model could temporarily be adopted again in light of the ongoing heatwave.

Notably, the summer break in Kashmir schools was observed from June 23 to July 7, with classes resuming today.
