Srinagar, June 23: As part of its ongoing anti-drug campaign, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said it arrested five individuals involved in drug peddling in separate operations carried out in Sopore and Kulgam districts. Various quantities of contraband substances were recovered from their possession.
In Sopore, police apprehended Mehraj-ud-Din Mir, a resident of Chijhama Rafiabad, during a checkpoint operation at Lalad near Bridge, where contraband was found on him. In another incident, Bilal Ahmad Dar from Chankhan Sopore was arrested in Takyibal after being caught with a poppy straw-like substance, police said in a statement.
Meanwhile, in Kulgam, police set up a checkpoint at Arreh and intercepted a vehicle (JK18D-3833) carrying two persons. A search led to the recovery of 8.1 kg of poppy straw-like substance. The accused were identified as Nazir Ahmad Kumar of Awhatoo and Ghulam Rasool Malla of Khudwani. Both were arrested, and the vehicle used in the crime was seized.
In a separate operation based on specific intelligence, a police team along with the local executive magistrate raided the residence of Murad Ahmad Behroo in Matalham. During the search, 800 grams of poppy straw-like substance was recovered, and the house owner was taken into custody.
Police confirmed that cases under relevant laws have been registered and investigations are underway.
“With continued public cooperation and vigilant enforcement, J&K Police remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate the drug menace and create a drug-free society,” the statement added.
