Light to moderate rains expected in J&K from Wednesday amid ongoing heatwave

Srinagar, June 23: As Jammu and Kashmir continues to reel under intense heat, the Meteorological Department has forecast a change in weather from Wednesday, bringing light to moderate rain and thundershowers at several locations across the region.

The relief, however, will be preceded by another day of hot and humid weather on Tuesday, with scattered rain spells expected in some areas.

Independent weather forecaster Aadil Maqbool has predicted that Tuesday could mark the hottest day of the season so far, with Srinagar expected to touch 36°C. The summer capital already recorded a high of 34.6°C on Monday. Jammu, the winter capital, saw slightly higher temperatures, with the mercury climbing to 36.6°C.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that from June 25 to 27, many areas are likely to witness intermittent rainfall and thundershowers, with the possibility of isolated heavy showers particularly in parts of the Jammu division. From June 28 to 30, scattered rain is expected to continue, with similar conditions forecast between July 1 and 2.

In light of the upcoming weather pattern, the department has issued an advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods in vulnerable zones. There is also a risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in hilly areas. Waterlogging in low-lying areas of Jammu plains is anticipated, along with a rise in water levels in local streams and rivers. Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation and agricultural activities such as spraying and fertiliser application from June 25 to 27.

Temperature readings across the region have remained well above normal. Qazigund recorded 33.4°C, Pahalgam 28.8°C, Kupwara 33.5°C, Kokernag 32.6°C, and Gulmarg 25.2°C. In Jammu division, Banihal recorded 30.5°C, Katra 32.5°C, Batote 29.1°C, and Bhaderwah 32.0°C.

Meanwhile, the forecasted rainfall is expected to bring much-needed respite from the prevailing heatwave and provide temporary relief to residents and farmers across the Union Territory.
