Kashmir on Track: What Vande Bharat Really Means

The launch of the Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir, flagged off recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is far more than a transport upgrade—it’s a statement. For the first time, India’s premier semi-high-speed train now reaches deep into the Valley, symbolising both technological triumph and political messaging.

Connecting New Delhi to Srinagar via Udhampur and Banihal, this sleek train cuts through some of India’s most difficult terrain, crossing iconic structures like the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway arch in the world. Beyond the engineering marvel, however, lies a deeper story of connection—between Kashmir and the rest of India.

For local residents, the Vande Bharat brings real promise. Farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs now have faster, more reliable ways to move goods. Students and patients can reach cities without depending solely on costly air travel. For the tourism sector—vital to Kashmir’s economy—the train offers a game-changing boost in accessibility.

Yet, this development is not without layers. The timing—amid electoral activity and post-Article 370 shifts—underscores how infrastructure is being used to shape a new narrative: one of integration through development.

That said, a train cannot carry trust by itself. Real progress in Kashmir requires inclusion, sustained political engagement, and equitable access. The Vande Bharat must serve not just tourists and officials, but also the ordinary Kashmiri—those in remote villages, small towns, and underserved communities.

Environmental sensitivity is another concern. The fragile Himalayan ecosystem cannot afford unchecked footfall. Growth must go hand in hand with sustainability, or else the costs may outweigh the gains.

Still, there is no denying the symbolism. The Vande Bharat’s journey into Kashmir is a metaphor for possibility. A region long seen as distant—geographically and politically—is now just a train ride away.

Whether this journey leads to real transformation will depend on what follows: smart policy, inclusive planning, and above all, listening to the people who call Kashmir home.

For now, as the train glides through mountain tunnels and across deep valleys, it carries a nation’s hope—that Kashmir’s future is on track.
