Minor girl’s suicide leads to major arrest in Handwara after forensic breakthrough

Handwara, June 20: Handwara Police in North Kashmir on Friday said that they arrested the accused in a deeply disturbing case of sexual assault involving a minor girl, who tragically ended her life after the incident. The arrest followed a rigorous investigation, including forensic analysis and DNA profiling.

According to police, the case registered at Police Station Qalamabad under FIR No. 17/2025 on May 6 was taken up under section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 5(J)(II) and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld, was found to be six months pregnant at the time the matter came to light.However, in a tragic turn of events, the minor girl attempted suicide by hanging at her home.

She was rushed to Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital but could not survive despite sustained medical efforts.

Police said multiple suspects were called in during the investigation.

A critical lead emerged when DNA profiling established the identity of the accused, a resident of Gulgam in Kupwara, as the biological father of the foetus. Based on this forensic evidence, the accused has been taken into custody.

Officials confirmed that further legal proceedings are in progress.
