Operation BIHALI enters day 2 as forces continue hunt for JeM terrorists in Udhampur forests

Jammu, Jun 27: The anti-terror operation BIHALI, which led to the killing of a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist in the Basantgarh forests of Udhampur district, has entered its second day, with security forces intensifying the search for the remaining militants believed to be hiding in the dense terrain.

Launched on June 26 following concrete intelligence, the operation targets a four-member JeM group that had been under surveillance for over a year. With one terrorist already eliminated, efforts are now focused on locating and neutralizing the remaining three.

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander of the Northern Command, praised the coordination and professionalism of the joint forces. “The swift and effective action taken by the Indian Army and J&K Police in Operation BIHALI underscores our firm resolve to rid the region of terrorism. Northern Command remains fully committed to maintaining peace and security,” he stated.

The encounter began near Karoor Nallah in the Bihali area when Army Para Commandos made contact with the group. Despite challenging weather conditions, including fog and rainfall, forces managed to eliminate a top JeM commander known by the alias “Maulvi”, who had reportedly infiltrated from Pakistan in April 2024 and was planning terror operations in the region.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, said that the search operation is ongoing and is being supported by sniffer dogs and drone surveillance. Additional reinforcements have been brought in to maintain a tight cordon despite poor visibility. “The forces are relentlessly combing the area, and we anticipate better clarity as weather improves,” he added.

The White Knight Corps of the Indian Army posted an update on social media platform X, confirming that one militant had been neutralized and the operation continues.

In light of the operation and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, security has been ramped up across Jammu & Kashmir, with 180 companies of central paramilitary forces deployed to ensure the safety of pilgrims ahead of the Yatra’s July 3 start. (KNO)
