Launches key tourism projects in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, June 23: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Gulmarg into a world-class golf destination, vowing to upgrade golfing infrastructure, host international tournaments, and enhance tourist amenities.

Speaking at an award ceremony for golfers and hoteliers during the Gulmarg Golf Championship, he emphasized the economic and tourism potential of golf tourism in the region.“Gulmarg has what it takes to attract global golf tourists those who contribute significantly to the local economy by staying in hotels, shopping, and enjoying other attractions,” he said.

Chief Minister highlighted that focused investments in golf infrastructure are worthwhile, citing Gulmarg’s legacy as a former hotspot for India’s top golfers.

He also called for a shift in mindset, encouraging locals and officials to view tourists as potential long-term patrons whose satisfaction should be prioritized. “Whether it’s golfers, horse riders, skiers, or vacationers every visitor should feel welcome,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister toured the new Gulmarg Convention Centre, praising its facilities including meeting halls, an auditorium, guest rooms, and dining areas.

He proposed introducing entertainment and dining options like cinemas, coffee shops, and restaurants to make Gulmarg a vibrant, year-round tourist destination.

In a key policy announcement, he said the government is considering the creation of a Jammu and Kashmir Golf Development Authority to oversee the management and upkeep of golf courses in Gulmarg, Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Jammu.

He stressed the need for professional maintenance and distinct demarcation of golf course areas.

CM Omar Abdullah also lauded the contributions of his father, former CM Dr. Farooq Abdullah, in developing golf infrastructure in the UT, and pledged to continue that legacy.

He appreciated local MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah’s efforts in promoting tourism through events like the Gulmarg Golf Championship, expressing hope that such initiatives would become regular features.Later, the Chief Minister laid the foundation for two major tourism projects: a 726-meter ski drag lift at Kongdoori worth ₹6.84 crore and a ₹50 lakh project to beautify the nearby Seven Springs water body.

During his visit to Kongdoori, Omar Abdullah interacted with tourists, who expressed their satisfaction with the region’s improving tourism scenario.

He also met a delegation of ponywalas, who voiced concerns about reopening local tourist spots. The CM assured them their issues would be addressed gradually.

In his inspection of the Gulmarg Convention Centre, the Chief Minister directed officials to fast-track remaining construction work and make the facility functional soon to support tourism and major events.

The day concluded with the Chief Minister flagging off a Cyclothon to promote youth participation in sports and advocate eco-friendly tourism across the Kashmir Valley.

He was accompanied by his Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, MLAs Farooq Ahmad Shah, Javed Riyaz Bedar, Mubarak Gul, and Tanveer Sadiq, along with senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary Dheeraj Gupta and representatives from the J&K Cable Car Corporation and Gulmarg Development Authority.
